This triptych pastel is the study for a large canvas by John Hartman (”The Apotheosis of Gilbert Desrochers”, 1992, oil on linen, 66 x 168 ins), which was included in an exhibition of the painter’s work at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in 1993 (the exhibition entitled “Painting the Bay”).

The composition pays tribute to folk artist and Hartman’s friend, Gilbert Desrochers. Hartman curated an exhibition of Desrochers’ work at the McMichael in 1991/1992, however Desrochers would pass away in 1990, prior to the show’s opening a year later.

We extend our thanks to John Hartman and Nicholas Metivier for their assistance in the cataloguing of this artwork.
