Carl Heywood
(1941)

Born in Galt, Ontario, he graduated from the Ontario College of Art (A.O.C.A.) in 1963 and travelled to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa where he researched painting by refined bees’ wax mixed with dry pigment (an ancient Egyptian method which preserves the original colours indefinitely). He has experimented with this medium but works in a variety of others. He was invited to Orillia, Ontario, by the Orillia Guild of Arts as a resident artist to teach drawing and painting to adult classes at the YMCA and to continue with his own painting.

The ‘Orillia Packet & Times’ noted the following of his solo show at the Orillia Public Library, “The paintings range from very precise landscapes through portraits and still life to abstract compositions. They are painted in a variety of media, including oil paint, egg tempera, watercolour and bondfast glue. Also to be seen are a number of drawings, mostly in pen and ink, some of them done in Egypt during the artist’s visit to that country in 1963… He feels that the idea of a resident artist to the community is a good way to reduce the separation that too often exists between art and everyday life.” He was to attend the Ontario College of Education at Toronto (summer 1967) and from there to teach art in a high school at Belleville, Ontario.
