Frederic Steiger
(1899 - 1990)

Frederic Steiger was a self taught artist, born in Solwutz, Austria who immigrated to Saskatoon in 1922 and moved to Toronto in 1943, where he opened a painting studio. He made regualr painting trips to Newfoundland from 1949 and France in 1952. His artwork has been collected by major institutions in Canada and the United States, and he was awarded a major commission to paint the portraits of fourteen Prime Ministers of Canada which he finished in 1951.
In “Who’s Who in America” (1978-9), Steigler remarked, “In my earlier work, I preferred to paint in an impressionistic style relating man to his environment but presently, Ligh, colour and Rhythm play an important part in my abstract paintings. Perhaps this represents my own optimistic outlook on life.”
