Leif Ostlund

A conversation with Leif Ostlund tells you at least one thing for sure. He is confident of his ability to create art.

“Life is hard, painting should give us relief from that. I want to draw people out of the shadows, and give them a break - if only for just a few moments.”

Leif Ostlund has been providing such welcome joy to people for more than two decades. Born in Prince George, BC, he grew up in the countryside and began painting at a very young age. His mother and uncle, both accomplished artists, encouraged him and provided him with a rich informal training. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design with honours and two scholarships, and has lived in Toronto ever since.

Harmony and spontaneity are the hallmarks of Ostlund’s work. His love of life spills exhuberantly into in his landscapes, still life and animals.

Ostlund finds his muse in symphonies by Mozart ,“a bedtime story of Winnie ther Pooh, and Ella Fitzgerald singing jazz” he says with a smile. “Greatness always comes with an oversized heart. That’s what I look for first - that elusive human element that paintings must have. In the end that’s all that matters.”
